Kesimpulan itu berdasar penelitian yang dilakukan tim dari Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. Tim mengirimkan 5.312 resume kepada lebih dari 2.600 perusahaan yang membuka lowongan pekerjaan.

Tim mengirim dua aplikasi dengan resume identik ke setiap perusahaan. Satu aplikasi dilengkapi foto, dan satu lainnya tanpa foto. Tim menempatkan sejumlah foto acak, mulai wanita berwajah cantik, pria tampan, hingga mereka dengan wajah biasa saja.

Peneliti setidaknya mengumpulkan foto dari 300 mahasiswa. Mereka kemudian membentuk panel untuk mengategorikan pria dan wanita berdasar daya tariknya. Untuk menghilangkan bias rasial, para peneliti memilih individu yang tampaknya memiliki latar belakang etnis yang ambigu.

Hasilnya, 19,9 persen calon karyawan pria tampan yang mengirim foto mendapat panggilan wawancara. Sebanyak 13,7 pria dengan foto wajah biasa saja yang mendapat panggilan wawancara. Hanya 9,2 persen pria yang tidak mengirim foto yang mendapat panggilan.

Berdasar analisis penelitian, pria berwajah menarik harus mengirim rata-rata lima resume dengan foto untuk mendapat satu panggilan wawancara. Sedangkan pria berwajah biasa saja harus mengirimkan 11 resume dengan foto untuk bisa mendapatkan panggilan serupa.

Sementara pada wanita menunjukkan hasil sebaliknya. Sebanyak 16,6 persen wanita yang mengirim resume tanpa foto mendapat panggilan wawancara kerja. Ini menunjukkan tingkat respons tertinggi dari perusahaan yang membuka lowongan.

Wanita yang mengirim resume dengan foto biasa saja, 13,6 persennya yang mendapat panggilan wawancara. Sedangnya wanita yang mengirimkan resume dengan foto menarik, hanya 12,8 persennya yang dipanggil untuk wawancara.

Peneliti menemukan tingkat respons yang hampir sama untuk semua kategori wajah wanita. Wanita yang mengirim resume dengan wajah menarik hanya memiliki kemungkinan 50 persen mendapatkan panggilan wawancara. Peluang itu sama dengan wanita yang mengirim resume dengan foto biasa saja atau tanpa foto.

Peneliti juga mengambil kesimpulan bahwa respons perusahaan terhadap resume dipengaruhi jenis kelamin calon karyawan. Ketika pria mengirimkan resume dengan foto, perusahaan menganggapnya sebagai gambaran kepercayaan diri. Tapi ketika wanita mengirim resume dengan foto, cenderung dianggap ‘menjilat’ melalui penampilan.

“Penelitian kami justru menunjukan, kecantikan dan ketampanan menghalangi kesempatan mendapat pekerjaan. Pria dan wanita yang memenuhi kualifikasi dan berwajah menarik bisa jadi dicoret sejak awal proses seleksi,” kata salah satu peneliti, seperti dikutip NY Times. (pet)
